Project 5/6. Papercraft Objects: Samples/Research
Project #5 is all about planning for the 3D real-life paper model that we will construct for our next class. Using Rhinoceros, we created a minimum of 8 separate 3D pieces and proceeded to unfold them into 2D templates.
Form 1:
3 Cylinders varying in size to replicate a paint bottle.
Form 2/3:
3 decagon pillars varying in size to replicate the bottle portion of a soap dispenser. 3 cylinders varying in size to replicate the lid and pump of a soap dispenser.
Form 4
1 hexagon pillar and 1 cylinder to replicate an incense holder that I own. 1 cylinder to replicate an incense stick.
Form 5
1 hollowed-out rectangular prism to replicate a bookshelf.
Form 6
2 hollowed-out cylinders to replicate the lipstick holder and lid. 1 slanted-ended cylinder to replicate the lipstick.
Form 7/8
1 round-ended rectangular prism and 1 hollowed-out cylinder to replicate the nail polish bottle. 1 hollowed-out cylinder to replicate the lid. 1 cylinder and 1 round-ended rectangular prism to replicate the brush.
Vibrant Quilled Paper Illustrations and Sculptures by Yulia Brodskaya
Yulia Brodskaya has created an amazing use for the thin pattern created when quilling. The use of quilling gives her works of elderly people a sense of depth through the use of the paper creating the wrinkles of the skin. There is no denying that the laugh lines surrounding each individual's face are given more emphasis and attention with this use of paper and its 3D elements.

The use of sticking colours is also amazingly used in Brodskaya's works. It is a very bold and sudden shift when being compared to the elderly model. The bright paper, which is mainly used to create clothing or props, gives the piece of art a sense of energy and life that otherwise wouldn't be seen in the pieces of art.

I selected this artist mainly because of the way she was using her medium and the way she uses colour and its meaning in her art. I love the way the paper is curled and rounded into waves through quilling. It gives the artwork a sense of movement and the flowing shapes are something that caught my attention. I also love the symbolism and her reasoning for her use of colour. By wanting the colours to represent life and energy, she created many bold and sticking images.
